A volunteer center has been established at the Cursillo Retreat Center near Biloxi in a town called Dedeaux, according to Deacon Marcus Hepburn, disaster coordinator of the Florida Catholic Conference. Deacon Hepburn, who just returned from Biloxi, said the facility contains 72 beds and groups of volunteers already are scheduled to arrive over the next several weeks.
Catholic Charities will continue to need volunteers to assist with counseling, administration, cleaning up of debris, and working in the relief centers. Volunteers must bring bedding, pillow, towels, and toiletries to the center. However, hot showers, a chapel, and kitchen are available there. Since there are very few places to stay in Mississippi, Deacon Hepburn said Catholic Charities is fortunate to have access to the retreat center.
"Accessibility from the volunteer center to the hurricane relief centers is straightforward and easy," said Deacon Hepburn. "The majority of travel will be on Interstate 10."
It is estimated that the relief centers are serving up to 5,000 people a day.
